Maybe I’ve watched Brief Encounter once too often!

Of course, our instinct is to assume that the couple are waiting for a train on which one of them will depart alone. However, there are various other possibilities: maybe one of them has just arrived - hence the lingering smoke from the departing train - or they could be leaving together.
